‘Incredibly proud’

Hero police officer’s mum thanks colleagues for helping to deliver her son’s get-well cards

The mother of the hero police officer, who was attacked with a machete in London last month, has thanked colleagues for their help in delivering her son’s get-well cards.

PC Stuart Outten suffered severe stab wounds to his head and hands as he tried to stop a van driver suspected of having no insurance in Leyton, east London shortly after midnight on Thursday 8 August.

He was injured as he shielded a female officer before managing to use his Taser to incapacitate his assailant, who was said to have launched a ‘sudden and brutal attack’.

After PC Outten was discharged from hospital, his mother sent the below message to colleagues at Leyton Delivery Office.

‘I am the mum of the police officer involved in the recent machete attack in London. I would like to thank the Royal Mail for ensuring the cards and letters that were sent to him from all over the UK got to New Scotland Yard and have now been given to him.

‘We have seen from the envelopes that they were not all addressed correctly. Some just said: “To the machete policeman, London”, or his name, plus London.

‘Rather than just discard them, you have taken the time and compassion to ensure he got them. For that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Those cards and good wishes have meant so much to him and our family.’

Following the attack, in a statement issued by the Metropolitan Police, Pc Outten's family said: ‘We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support we have received from the public, Stuart's colleagues and the wider policing family.

‘We are incredibly proud of the bravery Stuart showed during the incident. His injuries could have been fatal.’

The Met said they were ‘proud’ of the bravery Pc Outten showed during the incident. Metropolitan Police Federation chairman Ken Marsh previously said: ‘Police officers across London are out there every day at risk protecting the public - and sadly, yet again, a Metropolitan Police officer has suffered a severe injury on duty.

‘Enough is enough. Police officers should be going home at the end of their shifts. Not to hospital.’
