Our automation journey rolls on at pace as Sheffield becomes the 13th site with a parcel sort machine

This week, Sheffield Mail Centre became the 13th site to go live with our new state-of-the-art parcel sort machine (PSM) technology.

During 2018/19, 12% of our parcels were sorted by machine, compared to around 90% of letters. But as we move from a letters business that delivers parcels to a parcels business delivering letters, our five-year ‘turnaround and grow’ plan will see us move to more than 80% of parcels being automated.

By the end of our first quarter next year, we’ll have 20 PSMs in our operation and colleagues at each of the mail centres benefitting, will have adapted to the changing nature of their roles.

Bristol Mail Centre began using its new parcel sort machine last month and colleagues have been delighted with the results.

‘The machine makes a lot of difference because we’re now going faster, we’re competing better, and it’s much easier to work with,’ said OPG Balbir Singh-Chuhan. ‘It’s not as hard to operate as I thought it might be.’

OPG Pete Flook, said: ‘If you have a team of people working on it who are dedicated to what they’re doing and they’re all working as a team, the work goes out a lot faster. If you’ve got the right machinery and the right people, we can have jobs for life.’
