How we can reduce the number of dog attacks

Dog attacks are a significant danger. In 2018-19, an astonishing 2,484 dog attacks occurred on postmen and women across the UK.

It’s why Delivery colleagues must take precautions and follow the correct procedures to prevent life-changing injuries, something we’re highlighting as part of this week’s Dog Awareness Week in which we’re promoting responsible dog ownership.

Weston-super-Mare postwoman Deb Saunders was involved in a serious incident with a dog when she went out on delivery.

’The lady of the house opened the door. Out came her two dogs. One of the dogs attacked me, and wouldn’t let go. He was just hanging off my leg. I cried to the owner to get the dog off me. She did but put she put him back down on the floor, so the dog then came back and then went for me again. I ended up in a flower bed and there was blood everywhere. I was in shock.

’It got to the stage where after the incident was over, I was back out on delivery and I’d go into panic mode. I contacted a counsellor, he did help me – but unfortunately I’m still afraid of dogs.’

The number of attacks is still too high and every dog attack is one attack too many. On average, there are around 47 attacks taking place each week across the UK, with some leading to a permanent and disabling injury.

Make sure you watch this week’s RMtv Special on Dog Awareness Week, where we speak to Dr Shaun Davis and colleagues about our national campaign to help reduce the number of dog attacks on our postmen and women.
