Being responsible

Our people, communities and environmental performance are among the key business issues we’ve revealed our actions on in this year’s Corporate Responsibility (CR) report, published this week.
Over the week we will share key highlights performance and facts from our 2018-19 report, which you can read in full online.
What does the CR report cover?
Our CR strategy and our role in society
Royal Mail plays a significant role in life in the UK. CR is at the centre of our business strategy and vital to our success. This means providing good quality jobs with fair working conditions, building a workplace where our people can thrive and using our unique role as a business to deliver long term benefits to local communities. Our role in society is clear; to deliver a modern, optimised and efficient network, investing in our operations in every community and around the world, supporting SMEs and driving economic growth for all, being committed to our communities, dedicated to our people and delivering a first class service. The CR report outlines our key areas of focus and our progress.
Our customers
Key trends in e-commerce, click and collect and next-day delivery services are changing our mail bags. With that change comes different expectations from our customers. The CR report sets out the priorities our customers tell us are important to them, our customer satisfaction and Quality of Service performance, and outlines new initiatives and services we have launched throughout the year to ensure we remain easy to do business with for both consumers and business customers.
Our people
Our people are key to our transformation and the delivery of our business success. We are one of the largest employers in the UK, with one in every 192 people in employment working for Royal Mail. We therefore recognise our responsibility to our people. The report outlines our work to listen to our employees and make improvements to increase employee engagement, our investment in learning and development and rewarding people fairly, and our work in providing a diverse and inclusive work environment. The health, safety and wellbeing of our people and the communities we operate in remains of paramount importance. We report our safety performance and key programmes and initiatives to drive improvement.
Our communities
Royal Mail seeks to be an integral, valued and trusted, delivering economic and social benefits to the communities in which we operate. Our CR report outlines our economic and social impacts, and our strategic community investments. Focusing on our programmes to support mental health in children, the report highlights the amazing fundraising efforts of our colleagues, and the work and impact that is having within our communities.
Our suppliers
We are committed to working across our supply chain to have a positive impact on society and the environment. The report provides information on how we work collaboratively with our suppliers to encourage improving standards of social, environmental and ethical conduct, encouraging workforce diversity and sharing best practices.
Our environment
Environmental considerations are a fundamental part of how we do business. We are committed to the sustainable management of our natural resources, increasing efficiency and reducing our use of resources to control costs, manage the impacts of climate change and support business performance. This section of the report provides information on our environmental performance, our progress on reducing the environmental impacts of our fleet, and our work on reducing waste.
