Heroes among us

Saturday 29 June is Armed Forces Day – your chance to congratulate one of our amazing reservists

Saturday 29 June is Armed Forces Day, an annual event celebrated to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces, from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets.

Earlier this week, Wednesday 26 June was Reserves Day, a day when, together with Armed Forces Day, all colleagues who are UK reservists are encouraged to wear their Armed Forces uniforms to work.

Play the video above to watch one of our many proud reservists, distribution manager, Jim Coventry from Glasgow Mail Centre, talk about his service with the Royal Navy, the amazing work of the British Forces Post Office (BFPO), which delivers mail to service personnel serving on operations overseas, and how proud he’ll be to wear his uniform to work this Saturday.

‘On Armed Forces Day I’ll be joining colleagues from the Reserves to wear our forces uniforms to work,’ said Jim.

‘After we go home from the day job, we give up our spare time to help keep the country safe. This is a chance for everyone to see who we are.

‘The forces have a special relationship with Royal Mail – when you’re so far away from everyone it’s a lifeline to get those letters from home.

‘Royal Mail signed the Armed Forces Covenant because they appreciate how much reservists and veterans contribute to the company and the country.

‘If your delivery person is in their forces uniform on the 29 June, please go and shake their hand, because it’s a very important thing that they’re doing, for all of us.’

In 2015, Royal Mail signed the Armed Forces Covenant to support the armed forces community in the UK. This marks our recognition of the value that serving regular and reservist personnel, veterans and military families contribute to the business and to the UK.

As part of the covenant, we will promote the fact that Royal Mail is an armed forces-friendly organisation actively championing our reservists and their activities.

Royal Mail reservists

Royal Mail actively supports employees who are reservists for the UK Armed Forces. We currently have around 200 military reservists – one of the largest groups in the country – who combine working for us with protecting their country at home and overseas.

The Royal Mail Group Armed Forces network supports reservists, ex-regulars and their spouses, recognising those who have served, continue to serve, and are part of the Forces community.
