Letters for votes

The Professional Footballer’s Association (PFA) recognises the enduring appeal of letters

The Professional Footballer’s Association (PFA) has recognised the enduring appeal of letters for English football’s most prestigious awards.

The PFA will resist calls to introduce an electronic ballot for their Team of the Year and Player of the Year awards.

The current system, where players vote by filling out paper forms, which are delivered to clubs in March, has faced criticism for taking place too early in the season.

Changing it from a paper process to an electronic one, where players vote by email, was one option but the PFA, who review yearly, has announced that it is not planning any alterations.

The primary reason is there is a suspicion that players might ignore their request to vote, even if it is emailed directly to their inbox. It would also take away the excitement factor of squads filling out the forms after they have been hand-delivered by PFA delegates.

The number of UK domestic letters in our mailbag is forecast to decline by around 26% over the next five years. Letters have been in structural decline for some time, but they’re still a core part of our business model and will be for many years to come.
