Following up on every lead to ensure our containers and equipment are never misused

As part of the National Assets team, Royal Mail has a large estate of containers and equipment that we use in the processing of mail. Occasionally this equipment goes from our internal and customer networks into the hands of public and private businesses.

Our assets are a vital part of the operation, and as such, we commission them to a high standard. This makes them valuable. We rely on colleagues who spot misuse of our equipment by other companies to come forward with leads for us to follow up on.

The container department within the National Assets team follows up on every lead put forward, firstly by liaising with the sales and customer account teams to ensure they are not a direct or indirect customer of ours, and secondly, by following up with our access customers.

If there are any incidents of misuse by our own customers we work closely with the account managers to steer them towards the correct procedures.

Ian James MacDonald, national container supply & MHE manager, said: ‘When external misuse is identified, Royal Mail works alongside our third-party suppliers, who support us in retrieving our assets back into rightful ownership.

‘The information colleagues provided us last year led to the recovery of 25,886 assets with a net value of £330,971. This was a fantastic result. We act upon every misuse case. Please help us in retaining what we all work hard for so that we can continue to deliver our customer promises.’
