‘It’s an exciting time’
As part of our five-year transformation journey three new fully-automated parcel hubs will be built to handle next day, large and smaller Tracked parcels.
A separate van delivery for these items will be routed through potentially 200-300 of our large delivery offices. This will reduce the cost of handling all parcels, including small items.
We will also introduce a second daily delivery for larger items and parcels purchased online from retailers the evening before. This will be fully operational by 2023.
We have informed the CWU about our plan and we are committed to working collaboratively with our unions on the strategy, detailed design and deployment.
Play the RMtv video above to hear Euan McMurdo, logistics director, tell us more about the journey and what the plans will mean for colleagues in Logistics.
‘We’ll be growing over the next five years and that means there will be more driving roles and more network connections for large truck drivers,’ said Euan. ‘We’ll also be simplifying the driving roles and network connections for mid-size truck drivers. I think it’s an exciting time.
‘There’ll be an opportunity for colleagues to advance their careers. So those who drive small vehicles presently, those who don’t drive at all, but want to drive small and large vehicles, will be able to progress through a career progression agreement with the union to drive large HGV Class 1 heavy goods vehicles.
‘We’re also likely to be buying more electric vehicles, so it’s a very exciting time. But it’s a lot of hard work. We’re introducing parcel hubs and that will give opportunity for employees, for drivers, for people in processing like there hasn’t been before. So, people in Logistics should be very excited.’
