Vote 100

Celebrating our amazing Royal Mail women – Sian Rees

Her resilience, sense of humour and farming skills are reasons enough why Swansea distribution manager, Sian Rees, has been nominated for our Vote 100 campaign.

West Wales annual leave cover manager, Elaine Tucker, said: ‘Sian has worked for Royal Mail for nearly 30 years. She started as a postwoman before entering management and has managed to achieve a successful career while raising three children and running a farm!

‘She gives 100% to her job and always strives to help people in any way she can. One example of her dedication is the fact that she worked every weekend in the run up to last Christmas, even on her birthday, sometimes going in to work at 4am and remaining there until 4pm.

‘Sian always goes the extra mile to get the job done while also managing to have both a laugh and a smile on her face. She has mentored workshop manager, Sara Reynolds, a successful ex-graduate, and supported her development wholeheartedly.’

Sara said: ‘The work Sian does is completely underestimated to be honest. When I was working in Cardiff it highlighted just how much Sian not only takes on, but achieves in what can be a challenging environment. It’s through Sian’s support and mentorship that I’ve really regained my confidence and thanks to her, I have been able to start forging my way in Logistics.’

‘Her resilience and work ethic are a great inspiration to myself as a manager, but also because she is my mum! It was she who suggested I apply for the operations management graduate scheme and I can’t place a value on the support she has given me since I have been in the business. It has also brought to light just how much she cares and provides for other people, not just in work, but also at home. She always puts others before herself and truly never stops working.’

‘I feel very honoured and touched that I have been put forward to celebrate women in the workplace and the comments above are really appreciated,’ said Sian. ‘I now know that I’m doing something right!

‘I started in Royal Mail on 7 May 1990 and this is my 29th year. I feel very proud to have worked for this company and over the years, I have worked in all aspects of the operation gaining a full understanding of the business.

‘My work ethic has stemmed from my farming background, making sure that I get the job done and not letting anyone down. This can be whatever the weather, day or night, as the animals still need feeding and care on Christmas day! I have taken this work ethic over to Royal Mail and over the years, I have coached and mentored colleagues and seen them gain success.

‘I feel that every day brings a new challenge and everyone has something to offer in their own right. Everyone has a place no matter what. These beliefs and values have stood me in good stead gaining trust and respect, and hopefully, I can carry on improving myself and others.’
