Being good at what we do

Colleagues in Inverness saw their mail centre move as an opportunity for positive change

Working together effectively and improved training were among the priorities for Inverness colleagues when they shared their views at one of our ‘temperature checks’.

We carried out a number of joint visits with the CWU across the country to ask teams what’s good and bad about our culture.

Inverness colleagues told how changes to the types of mail being delivered – including an increase in parcels – can put extra pressure on teams. Better training, including for new recruits and managers, was suggested as a way of retaining the workforce, and there were calls for improved communication between managers and colleagues.

Postman Mike Birney said: ‘We all want the same thing – Royal Mail to be the best. We want to have the best conditions and we want the managers to be good at what they do, giving us the chance to be good at what we do.’

Delivery office teams moved to the new Inverness Mail Centre last month, and colleagues have seen this as an opportunity to make positive change. Postman James Fraser said: ‘If you move to a new location, people probably accept change more.’

Postwoman Kat Turra (pictured) said the visit was ‘helpful’ for giving colleagues a chance to raise issues with people not directly involved with the office.

Kenny Logan, CWU divisional rep for Scotland and Northern Ireland, said: ‘There was a lot of honesty and it was great that colleagues had an opportunity to raise any concerns or issues.’
