A time for giving

This Sadaqa Day, you can do something special with Action for Children

On Sunday 24 March, mosques, community groups, women’s groups and schools will join forces across Britain for Sadaqa Day.

Sadaqa Day is a time for giving. It’s also the perfect time to get together with family and friends and make a real difference in your community.

In 2015, activist and consultant Julie Siddiqi, founded Sadaqa Day to mobilise Muslims to get involved in social action. She was inspired by several Islamic teachings that encourage benevolence, especially Sadaqah or Sadaqa, one principal avenue for charitable giving. It is voluntary; anyone can give whatever they can afford at any time during the year.

Since it started, Sadaqa Day has gained a huge following from other faith groups, schools and communities, who have joined in to make a difference to their local communities. Many people wish to volunteer but don’t get around to doing so for many reasons. Julie felt that a dedicated national day would enable people to do something new or more for charity and help the community work together for good causes.

Around 1,700 volunteers from all walks of life took part in Sadaqa Day in 2018, doing good in their own way from cooking for the homeless and visiting care homes and hospitals, to knitting, litter picking, and collecting for foodbanks.
