‘If we don’t do it right, other people will be happy to take our business’

Service delivery director - South, Ricky McAulay, took part in our final RMtv live session at Jubilee mail centre.

Colleagues from the local area asked a number of questions. Topics discussed included the decline in letter volumes and how this affects our profits, Door to Door mail, our parcel strategy and what we’re doing as a business to keep up with our competitors.

‘There are obvious challenges with letters,’ said Ricky. ‘It’s not just small letters – it’s also large letters. Our guidance has always been that letters decline at around 4-6% per year. But, there’s not a huge amount we can do if people decide to move to electronic communication.

‘On advertising mail, that’s treated slightly differently. There’s still value (from our customers) on Door to Door. We fight for every single letter. Mailmark provides a level of intelligence that our customers want. They tell us that this is valuable information. There are companies out there that don’t have the same level of confidence in their mailing lists. Door to Door, for the customer, is very affordable. That’s why we need to watch our quality of service. If we don’t do it right, other people will be happy to take our business.’

Responding to a question on our parcel strategy and how we are integrating parcel sorting machines with different mail centres, Ricky said: ‘We have introduced parcel sorting machines.

‘Forecasters predict that there are going to be a billion more parcels over the next 10 years. I have confidence we have enough coming through to fill these machines up, and more. If we maintain our market share, there’s plenty to go around. But we need to be at our best to make the most of this opportunity.’

You'll be able to watch highlights from the session in RMtv, on Content on Demand, from Monday 18 March. Play the video above to see what colleagues in attendance thought of the event.
