Logistics director, Euan McMurdo, took part in an RMtv live session at Yorkshire distribution centre (YDC).
Logistics colleagues from the local area asked a number of questions about quality, automation, productivity, where we need to improve, income generation, challenges on our roads, the future of our fleet, the Employee Survey, and our environmental obligations.
‘We need to focus on maintaining our quality despite the challenges we’re facing with the roadworks’ said Euan. ‘We’re working closely with Highways England now to look at the best times of the day to get our mail to its destination quicker, as well as working out alternative routes.
‘We need to keep getting the basics right everyday if we’re to maintain the edge over our competitors. When we’re working in large sites such as this one at YDC, it’s very easy to miss something, but our mail centres, distribution centres and drivers need to do what is asked – such as moving to time unless there is a hold authorisation. Everyone needs to play their part in ensuring each piece of the puzzle fits.
‘Our Fleet also needs to be fit for purpose. We’re investing in more than 200 additional electric vehicles to the 100 already in operation, and this will only grow. We’re also testing some larger electric vehicles with a view to making our larger fleet more environmentally friendly.
‘We’re gradually replacing our older vehicles too, but this will take some time to complete. One of the key changes we’re looking to make is to reduce the lifespan of our vehicles, which is currently 10 years, by a few years. This will help us maintain a more efficient and reliable fleet.
‘We need to keep hearing from our people to address concerns they have and suggestions for improvements. The Employee Survey has been used to great effect here at YDC, improving our processes and providing more training. Please make sure that you complete the survey – by 15 March – so that your voice is heard.’
You’ll be able to watch highlights from the session in RMtv, on Content on Demand, from Monday 18 March.
