Culture Club
Sally Ashford, chief HR officer and Terry Pullinger, CWU deputy general secretary (postal) visited Home Counties North Mail Centre in Hemel Hempstead on Friday, as part of Royal Mail and the CWU’s joint workplace culture visits.
More than 60 visits have taken place at Royal Mail sites across the country since the start of 2019, with each visit attended by senior representatives from both Royal Mail and the CWU.
As part of the visit, Sally and Terry took feedback and questions from more than 60 colleagues, gaining invaluable insight into the views of frontline colleagues on a number of issues. These included whether they would recommend working at Royal Mail to a family member or friend and the areas where Royal Mail can improve.
Play the video above to find out how Sally and Terry reflected on the discussions.
Sally gave her views on the visit: ‘It’s amazing how much energy and positivity about the company there is. We had lots of people saying they’d recommend this plant as a plant they’d like their friends and family to work in. There were also really positive suggestions about how we can change things at a local level to make the plant even better.’
Terry was also enthused by the visit: ‘It was excellent. We see culture as one of the touchstones of success, we want to get a more positive, energetic culture at Royal Mail.
‘It’s very worthwhile to come out and talk to the people who work in this building and have worked in this building for a number of years every day and get their perspective on Royal Mail, the union, management. So many ideas come out of it, you can tell the enthusiasm. I genuinely believe that our members and Royal Mail employees are dedicated people.’
Sally and Terry will be attending more sites over the coming weeks and sharing the feedback from their visits with Royal Mail and CWU leadership to help inform future focus areas as part of a continued effort to enhance the culture across all Royal Mail sites.
