Preparing for the future and understanding the reasons for change

Service delivery director - Central, Geoff Braden, has taken part in an RMtv live session in Warrington mail centre.

Geoff answered a number of questions from colleagues covering a wide variety of topics including managing the decline in letters and growth in parcels, our investment in technology, manager training, the shorter working week, culture change and what actions we have put in place as a result of last year’s Employee Survey.

In the coming days, we’ll be holding similar events with Rob Jenson (North), Ricky McAulay (South), Euan McMurdo (Logistics) and Gary Simpson (Parcelforce). You will be able to watch the highlights of the event most relevant to your area, on RMtv, from 18 March.

The changing market

‘The market is changing dramatically,’ Geoff told colleagues in Warrington. ‘People’s personal shopping habits are changing – not just with online ordering; they want next day delivery and to order as late as possible in the day. It’s how we prepare ourselves as a company to deal with that.

‘In the next few years we are going to be delivering parcels with a few letters. Volumes will increase as will the size of parcels. We are going to have to adapt our equipment and mail centres to handle those changes. It’s an exciting future for all of us, but we have to earn the right to be in that market.

‘For every parcel delivered in the UK - we deliver more than all our competitors combined. We are the best company for delivering letter-boxable parcels and that’s a big area of growth for the business. However, there is a lot of competition out there.

‘People stay at Royal Mail because they are proud to work for the company and proud of what we do every day for our customers. We can’t do this without our people. We are as successful as we are because of you, so please continue doing what you do’.
