Letters are better

‘Letters have a unique way to heal and connect’ – find out more with #Lettersconnect

#LettersConnect is the latest campaign from ‘From Me to You’, the charity working to end social isolation among people living with cancer.

From Me to You aims to brighten a cancer patient’s day and let them know they are not alone by encouraging connections through letters, cards and postcards.

Their #LettersConnect Twitter campaign wants to get people talking about the power of the hand-written letter in connecting people, reducing social isolation, and improving mental and physical wellbeing.

If your friend or loved one has cancer, the #LettersConnect campaign message is that ‘it's ok not to know what to say - why not write them a letter instead? Just don't avoid them, that social connection is essential’.

From Me to You are currently running a ‘Letters Are Better’ competition offering bookworms, stationery addicts and keen writers a prize that includes a copy of @wordsofhelen. To enter the competition, simply retweet the #LettersAreBetter competition tweet and comment on the post. Entrants via Facebook will need to share the post and comment on why letters are better. The competition closes on Sunday 10 March at 11.59pm. Terms and conditions can be found here.

One vital strand to the charity’s work is their ‘Donate a Letter’ campaign, which sees people writing letters to an anonymous recipient. From Me to You then deliver the letters to participating oncology ward inpatients around the country.

When Brian was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2010, his friend Alison offered to write letters to cheer him up. Over the next two years, as Brian’s cancer moved from stage III to IV, Alison’s letters kept on coming.

The letters became part of Brian’s recovery process, while Alison discovered a passion for writing she never knew existed. Four years on and Brian is now cancer free, Alison is an author, and the two have a relationship that only the term ‘best friends’ can describe.
