Major milestone

Our battle with scam mail has passed another major milestone – and we have now stopped more than four million items since November 2016.
As our campaign gathers momentum, a new training video has been released so colleagues can learn more about the subject.
Scam mail is a scourge on our society. We don't want to carry it. It is illegal mail that often targets the most vulnerable in our communities – promising fictitious wins on fake lotteries or non-existent free gifts.
Victims provide cash or their bank details to secure the ‘gift’ or ‘win,’ but either receive nothing or are defrauded of money from their accounts.
The new video suggests ways to identify vulnerable people in the community who might be a target of scam mail, and gives details about what to do about it.
If you suspect an item to be scam mail, you should tell your manager, who will share the information with the scam mail team.
The team has robust processes in place to identify and deal with scam mail. You should not refuse to deliver the mail, as this is against the law.
‘As part of the scam mail team at Heathrow Worldwide distribution centre, we have so far blocked more than four million items, which would have been sent to thousands of very vulnerable people around the UK,’ said postman, Lee ‘Max’ Kirby.
‘Our job gives us great satisfaction, knowing that we have stopped so much mail going to the elderly and other vulnerable people.’
The scam mail video is available on Content on Demand, under the supporting our people tab.
