Our busiest week

Field operations director - Delivery, Geoff Braden, tells us what we need to do in our busiest week

Colleagues at our St Rollox mail centre in Springburn, Glasgow, are expecting to process up to 2.2million items today - including up to 300,000 parcels.

Some 11,000 colleagues are working around Scotland, assisted by 1,100 temporary workers amid a boom in parcel delivery this year. Our St Rollox mail centre employs 650 colleagues and another 400 seasonal workers. Glasgow plant manager, Tony MacPherson, said he expected this year to be even busier than 2017, when 149 million items were processed.

‘The busiest time is 5pm, as many businesses close for the day,’ said Tony. 'During the night, mail gets posted around the country, with planes coming up from London and the Midlands to Edinburgh Airport, and we also have flights coming in from Aberdeen and the islands.

'We're getting mail in 24 hours a day and we believe we'll break the 149 million items we processed last year. With online demand we've seen our parcels increase year on year.'

Postwoman, Alison Wotherspoon said: 'We're at our peak now for Christmas cards and will be sorting tens of thousands of cards. Most people started at 6am and they'll work through till 2pm.

'Then colleagues on the late shift will come in to take over. From the middle of November there's been an upturn in parcels as a lot of people are buying early to get it through the postal system quicker.

'The mail is coming in all the time so it's all about keeping everything moving.'
