All in a day’s work

Worthing Scout Group full of praise for their new look HQ

Members of the postbox strategy team put their landscaping skills to great use at the behest of colleague and 2nd Worthing Scout group leader, Andy Budd.

Senior planning manager, Nigel Walton, and his current team, Howie White, Midge McGee and Andy gathered at the 2nd Worthing Scout HQ for their task of the day – the repairing and relaying of the Scout car park.

We started by clearing the area of leaves and brambles and putting everything into rubble sacks,’ said Nigel. ‘We then filled in any holes that we found in the car park surface with the aid of the six tonnes of stones and gravel that were delivered the day before.

Despite having to contend with persistent rain showers the group managed to make good progress and with the help of plenty of tea, not to mention Nigel’s wheelbarrow skills, began emptying the gravel bags and laying the stones before settling down to lunch.

‘With the ready-made facilities in the garden area to the side of the Scout HQ, it seemed a shame not to use them!’ said Nigel. ‘There was no better way than cooking our lunch of sausages, bacon and eggs on an open fire.’

Following lunch the final two bags of stones were laid and the job was done. ‘After all the equipment was put away and the washing up from lunch was completed, we all stood back and admired our hard work. It was then all home for tea and medals and a job well done.

‘One of the main reasons for taking on this challenge was to improve the appearance of the car park for arriving visitors. We’ve had lots of positive comments from members of the Scout group about how much more room there is now that the brambles and weeds have been cleared.

‘The building supports two beaver colonies (six to eight year-olds) one Cub pack (eight to 10 year-olds) and one Scout Troop (10 to 14 year-olds). They will be celebrating their 100th birthday in March 2023.’
