We Are Royal Mail

Andy Maginnis works at King’s Lynn delivery office as a collection supervisor, where he oversees the collection of mail from postboxes and business customers in the area.
Andy starts his day by setting up the collections point in the office. Colleagues now empty postboxes during the day while on delivery, as well as collecting from postboxes and local businesses at the end of the day. Andy monitors it all as well as doing some collections himself.
‘I’m here to make sure it all runs smoothly,’ said Andy. ‘From 4pm, businesses start shutting down – so the mail will start arriving here before it is transported to Peterborough.
‘I’d say we’re saving quite a lot of time by collecting on delivery. We’ve actually cut down on the number of boxes we have to empty at the end of the day, which means we can concentrate more on the business collections.’
Andy has been with the company for seven years, and says the biggest challenge is often organising collections when someone is off sick. ‘I was in the RAF so I’m used to making decisions and juggling things,’ he said. ‘I try to come up with ideas to help us get the job done. For example, if someone is sick or can’t work, I’ll work out how we can incorporate their collection into someone else’s route.
‘The team is really important. We usually have three people sorting out the business mail, and then another few sorting through the larger parcels. We’ve then got other colleagues dropping off mail while this is going on. So we all have to work together. There’s lots to do, but as long as everyone is pulling in the same direction the work gets done.
‘It’s very satisfying at 7pm when all the mail has left the building and is on its way to be processed. Job done!’
