Sixty years strong

From the palace to Frodsham – Gill makes it happen for her favourite customers

Postwoman Gill Hayes, from Frodsham delivery office, has two very special customers on her round.

The elderly couple always look out for Gill and welcome her arrival, and when she saw them recently, they told her that their 60th wedding anniversary was just around the corner.

‘I knew they didn’t have any family so I wanted to get them a telegram to mark their special occasion,’ said Gill. ‘But because I didn’t want them to know what I was planning, I couldn’t get their wedding certificate’.

‘I checked on the internet on how to go about it. I got my mum to call Buckingham Palace and explain the situation because I’m unable to use the telephone with me being deaf’.

People business partner Amy Grisdale, who met Gill on a recent visit to Frodsham, said: ‘The palace was very touched by Gill’s gesture and advised what information they needed to know to find the couple’s wedding records. Over a period of time Gill managed to get the information to the palace, and they were able to find the details.

‘When the big day arrived, Gill went to deliver the couple’s telegram but the husband was out. When he arrived a few minutes later his wife was shouting with excitement, saying “look what we have here”. Gill told their neighbours about it a few weeks beforehand and they gave the couple a little surprise party and arranged a blessing for them on the day. They were delighted with their telegram and were so pleased Gill had done all of this for them.’

Gill said: ‘They are still so excited and thrilled to bits. It really made my day.’

Gill won her local employee of the month scheme for her efforts.
