Christmas 1918

Searching for Christmas – send in any postcards or letters you may have from December 1918

On 11 November 1918, Allied forces and the German army signed an armistice, bringing an end to the First World War.

However, it was several months before many servicemen were able to return to their homes. Even then, it took several years before normal services were able to resume across the country.

Christmas 1918 would, for many, have been a quiet affair. The fighting was over but many loved ones were still abroad and memories of those killed or wounded during the war years would be at the forefront of people’s minds. In addition, many food items were still being rationed, and work to rebuild the country was yet to begin.

As we approach Christmas 2018, we’re interested to find out how differently people might have felt 100 years ago. A such, we are looking for any Christmas cards that might have been sent during this time.

Do you have any postcards or letters handed down through the generations from families recovering from the First World War? If so, we’d love to see a copy. Please email community@royalmail.com or post to Rhea Horlock, 100 Victoria Embankment, London, EC4Y 0HQ.
