Advancing in engineering

Introducing the next generation to the world of engineering

The Engineering team have been out and about this month promoting the launch of the Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship for 2019.

Colleagues took part in the World Skills UK show at the NEC, an event attended by school and college students, as well as teachers, careers advisors and members of the public from across the UK.

Receiving a lot of interest in our apprenticeship programme, the team promoted Royal Mail as a diverse and inclusive workplace with a variety of careers in many sectors along with colleagues from fleet vehicle maintenance.

With our engineering centre based in Swindon, local technician Eddie Henry also attended a recent school visit to Dorcan Academy to highlight the work of Royal Mail Engineering.

‘It was an opportunity for Royal Mail to show interested students and parents apprenticeship programme and make careers mentors aware of the continued commitment to the future of young people that our programme provides,’ said Eddie. ‘Next year will be another opportunity to inspire young people and hopefully introduce some of the next generation to the world of engineering.’

Meanwhile, working with the Engineering Development Trust, Manoj Vadher, head of engineering reliability & people development, has been organising events to promote more students into science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects at a younger age and inspire them to become future engineers, scientists and technical leaders.

As part of a wider programme sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering, 24 students from Year 10 and 11 visited our Birmingham plant recently to work through some hands-on activities designed to excite and enlighten young people on how STEM is fun, interesting and can lead to a rewarding career.

During the day students worked on hands-on activities such as refitting a twist belt, and looked at real-world applications of STEM in the workplace. The event was designed to encourage creativity and innovation through practical team-based activities allied to extensive problem solving and time management.

Students got the chance to meet our engineering apprentices and graduates to understand what it is like to study and work in an engineering environment. At the end of the day, the students were asked to present on their experience and were awarded with the Industrial Cadets certificate.

‘It was so rewarding to hear the positive comments from the students who really took a lot away from the day,’ said Manoj. ‘We truly inspired three young girls to the point that they will be applying for our engineering apprenticeship in their final GCSE year.’

We will be taking on 23 apprentices for our September 2019 cohort. Click here for further details.
