Automation engineer Alan Dawson, from Manchester mail centre celebrated 50 years’ service in September. Plant engineering and performance manager Paul Stierl, from Manchester mail centre, said: ‘Alan has been a respected member of Manchester’s engineering team for mine and everyone else’s entire careers!
‘There’s nobody who hasn’t benefitted from Alan’s support and good nature. It’s a truly incredible milestone to have reached 50 years’ dedicated service. Thanks for all your help personally and everything you have done for the team over all these years Alan, it’s very much appreciated.’
‘When I joined the business in Sept 1968 I was part of a huge intake of apprentice engineers in the North West,’ said Alan. ‘We had been recruited to be the future engineering staff of three new letter offices in Manchester, Liverpool and Preston as well as the Manchester parcel office.
‘Our job was very different back then because as well as maintaining the machines within the offices, we also looked after the heating, lighting, lifts and canteen equipment.
‘The first postal mechanisation equipment to be installed included ALFs (automatic letter facing machines) SEGs (segregators) tray conveyors, chain conveyors and a parcel sorting machine which was very different to what we have today.’
Postman John Martin, from Exeter mail centre, also celebrated 50 years’ service in September. Work area manager Neil Penfold, from Exeter mail centre, said of John: John started work for Royal Mail in September 1968 as a telegram boy at Bedford Street delivery office.
‘He then progressed to being a postman following in the footsteps of his father and brother. From there, like his father, he went on to be a postal higher grade.
‘During his long years of service for Royal mail John has done a variety of jobs including parcels, driving, delivery and processing. Since 1976, he has been highly involved with the old registry and now priority services.’
