Positive values

As part of Black History Month we are profiling a number of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) colleagues to celebrate the differences, contributions and achievements of our diverse workforce.
Safety, health and environment lead, Nnamdi Maduka, from Greenford mail centre, has worked at Royal Mail for 14 years.
‘My name is Nnamdi Raphael Maduka. I am also known as Father Nnamdi as I am an assistant Church of England priest. I also serve the Igbo church in London as I am originally from Nigeria.
‘I have worked in various shifts and different work areas as a supporting manager. I am now the safety lead in Greenford having previously been the plant environment lead. I have a great passion for the environment, which connects to my Christian values. This enables me to use this passion to affect my community in a positive way.
‘As a voluntary Church of England priest I provide pastoral care and am always available to help, advise, and direct those who need it. I’m also a volunteer hospital chaplain at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.
‘I’m proud to belong to both the BAME steering group and that of the Church of England. The differences we have add values to our community as we complement one another, enriching our values. We are all only a unique part of the jigsaw puzzle. As important as we feel as individuals, communities and nations; we cannot function on our own without all the other parts of the puzzle coming into play.
‘My work with the community was recognised by the Church of England, which sponsored my degree programme at Durham University. I’m happy to say that I came out with flying colours.
‘One of my key achievements within Royal Mail includes making a huge energy savings at zero cost, using best practices. This led to me winning a financial award in 2013 from our then east regional director.’

Making our business a place where black, Asian and minority ethnic colleagues can achieve their potential remains a priority.
Career progression is a key focus as we work towards improving the representation of colleagues from BAME backgrounds across all levels of the business. We need to build greater awareness that the network exists and is there to support our people and shine a light on all the good positive things we are doing across the business.
