Teamwork makes the dream work for our golfing fundraisers

Colleagues from West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester golfed strong and went long, raising a whopping £2,400 for our charity partner, Action for Children.

When Yorkshire delivery leader, Simon Scott, said that he wanted to do something special to raise funds for Action for Children, operations manager for West Yorkshire, Jan Wormald, suggested they ask Bradford Valley delivery office manager, Shane Whitford, for ideas as he had organised various fundraising events in the past.

Project planning co-ordinator, Leanne Lyons, from Manchester mail centre, who helped organise the event alongside delivery area support manager, Janet Sheard from Hebden Bridge delivery office, said: ‘Six weeks in the planning, our event took place at St Ives golf club in Bingley. We had a great turnout with around 18 teams in attendance.

‘We tee’d off at 11.30am with bacon butties and coffee. There was a gamble hole on the course where players had the opportunity to bet £10 to get their ball on the green and double their money. We also had some ‘booze buggies’ travelling around the course to raise even more funds, but perhaps the less said about these the better!’

After a long day of polishing their strokes, the teams sat down for a two-course meal with speakers, comedian, John Scott, and former Scotland, Liverpool and Leeds footballer, Dom Matteo, who donated Leeds FC hospitality tickets and a signed autobiography to a silent auction.

‘After a trophy presentation for the longest shot and “The Big Chiefs” winning team, which included Simon and Jan, we held a raffle and silent auction,’ said Leanne. ‘The raffle tickets were placed in an envelope on each table and the table captains had to ensure that each person placed £10 in the envelope for a strip of raffle tickets.

‘Prizes included tickets to England vs New Zealand in the rugby league Tri-Series, a year’s free gym membership at “The Gym” in Huddersfield, a family ticket for North Bay Railway in Scarborough, and various spa and treatment vouchers.

‘Shane organised the silent auction, which included prizes such as shirts signed by Gazza and Steven Gerrard as well as the England rugby team.

Shane said: ‘The event was a great success and everyone had a really good day, with a brilliant total raised for Action for Children. I’m looking forward to hopefully organising another event next year. Thanks to all involved’.
