Adam Day – the stamp stopper

Adam Day has been with Royal Mail for 20 years, working in the packet hand stamp area of Cardiff mail centre.

His main responsibility is manual sorting, which involves cancelling stamps on all types of mail – from letters to heavy boxed items like televisions. He also carries out quality and weight checks, surcharges and price checks.

Adam says the role has changed significantly over the years with the introduction of new technology. ‘When I first started doing it there were about six tables, and now there’s only one,’ he said.

He says having a good grasp of maths is crucial to figuring out the weight, and therefore price, of items. Although rates change every year – and his team uses a chart to keep track – Adam knows most of the figures ‘off tap’.

His favourite thing about Royal Mail is the colleagues he works with every day – and he believes both communication and good listening skills are an essential part of teamwork. ‘People need to listen well, so we all understand each other and are able to get the job done,’ he said.

Outside of work, Adam is a keen photographer. ’I’ve always got my camera on me and if I think it’s a good photo, I’ll take it,’ he added.

With two decades of experience in the business, Adam is more than happy to offer a helping hand to newer team members. ‘I’m approachable,’ he said. ‘If there’s a problem, they always seem to come to me – it’s because I’m the oldest, I suppose.’
