Lynn delivers gold

Sawbridgeworth delivery office now has a world champion team member thanks to a postwoman’s success as part of the England women’s deaf rugby team.
Lynn Bryant, who was born with 60% hearing loss, was part of a rugby sevens team of deaf and hard-of-hearing players that triumphed at the recent tournament in Australia.
The women’s England deaf rugby sevens squad won every match in a five-game series against the home nation, picking up the gold medal.
Lynn says she has always been into a range of sports, from athletics and triathlons to boxing.
‘It was thrilling to be selected for the England rugby sevens squad,’ said Lynn. ‘Rugby helps keep me physically fit and mentally sharp. That has benefits for my day job, because I am very active in my role at Royal Mail.’
‘The deaf team plays just like any other rugby team. The England team does have some coaches who use sign language when we’re training. But once you get out there with your gumshield in and the wind up, people use signs and gestures anyway.
‘Everything is quieter, because I can’t wear my hearing aid, but I can hear the referee’s whistle.’
Lynn said she appreciates Royal Mail giving her time off to train and prepare for matches.
‘It is hours of intense training – proper stuff,’ she said. ‘You are representing “the rose” so you have to prepare.’
She said she has been overwhelmed by the support and encouragement she has received from colleagues.
