‘A true gent’

Postman John Charles celebrates 50 years at Royal Mail

Congratulations to postman John Charles from Haverfordwest delivery office, who celebrated his milestone 50th year working at Royal Mail.

John has always worked in Haverfordwest, having started as a telegram boy when he was just 15 years old, only two days before his 16th birthday.

John has been delivering to Solva for more than 30 years. He used to work in the Old Quay Street office until it relocated to Merlin’s Bridge in 1985.

Haverfordwest delivery office manager, Nicky Smith, said: ‘John is a real character who takes enormous pride in his job, his customers and the service he provides to them.

‘John is the perfect example of embracing change and when you think of the change he has been a part of his behaviours really align to our values. He’s a true gent and a privilege to have as part of my team.’

When talking about his anniversary John mentioned that 50 years ago people used to eagerly wait for their mail as it was their main form of communication.

‘They couldn’t wait to get their hands on their post whereas now with the internet and mobile phones, it’s not  nearly so important to them as they have the ability to share news at the touch of a finger,’ said John.

‘Fate dealt me a good hand as a few weeks prior to joining Royal Mail I went for an interview with the Army. Two days after I joined Royal Mail I was advised that I had been successful. After 50 years here I can say that I definitely made the right choice.

‘It has been a real privilege working for Royal Mail and I’ve made some really good friends both in work and through my customers. I wouldn’t change a thing.’
