Youth empowerment

The Youth & Friends steering group hosted an event at the Phoenix Centre in London.

At present, colleagues under the age of 30 make up only around 8% of our workforce. Our aim is to attract more young people into Royal Mail, as well as support and retain young talent.

HR director Sally Ashford led the event to find out why young people join the business and how they find their experience working here.

Sally asked:

• What is the experience for those under 30 in Royal Mail?
• How much does the ‘sell’ match reality?
• Why did they join Royal Mail?
• What are their mid/long-term aspirations and are there any internal barriers to achieving these?
• What do the Royal Mail values mean to this group?

Jason Crompton, chair of the Youth & Friends steering group, said: ‘This event was a great opportunity to speak directly to young colleagues from across the business to find out how they feel about working at Royal Mail and what we can do to improve their experience. 

‘It was also a fantastic chance to start to build a community of networks of like-minded people so we can make the experience of working at Royal Mail a more rewarding one. We are always on the lookout for colleagues to join and help increase insight and inform activity for young workers across the business.’
