Celebrating our amazing Royal Mail women – Angela Jarvis

Listening to others and making sure everyone feels part of the team are just some of the reasons why Angela Jarvis from the technical design authority, Group technology has been nominated for our Vote 100 campaign.

Chief architect Roger Newman from Group technology, said: ‘Natural behaviour when someone has been at an organisation for nearly 20 years is that they fall into a comfortable existence, knowing their job inside out, knowing how everything works and not challenging themselves or why things are the way they are. Angela isn’t like that.

‘She’s a stickler for detail and making sure that mistakes don’t happen or are minimised. Service comes first every time for Angela and whatever new project or task she is asked to do or picks up because no one else will do it she makes sure she does it right.

‘Finally, Angela isn’t scared of anything. She firmly believes she can do anything. So do I.’

‘I joined Royal Mail on a temporary contract after graduating from university, as part of the pensions administration team – I had no intention of staying long-term, rather just until I worked out what I really wanted to do.’ said Angela.

‘A couple of years passed without that eureka moment, and then the development of a new pensions system led me into the technology business unit; that’s when things changed for me. I found an area that really interests me, that I am good at, and where my hard work has been rewarded with promotions and increased responsibility.

‘My job title has changed a number of times over the years, but essentially what I do has remained the same - being a conduit between technical and non-technical people to deliver value for money IT services that meet the business needs.

‘I work with great people, who are experts in their fields and always willing to help. Technology has a very supportive culture, fantastic opportunities for professional development and qualifications, and has a key part to play in the future successes of Royal Mail Group. I feel that I have a career here, not just a job, and that being a woman has no bearing on the way I am treated or what I can achieve – just the way it should be. I am very happy to say that I have found what I really want to do.’
