Two wheels good

Our Bikes, Big Trucks and You programme receives important feedback

The thank you letters came flooding in from the children of Wooden Hill School in Bracknell recently – but this time Royal Mail was on the receiving end, instead of simply delivering them.

The letters followed our visit to the school as part of our annual ‘Bikes, Big Trucks and You’ education programme.

Bikes, Big Trucks and You is a partnership between Royal Mail and Berkshire local authorities addressing the significant increase in risk to child cyclists as they transition into secondary education, especially around HGVs

The Wooden Hill school visit is just one of many that we undertake in a joint venture with the West Berkshire road safety team and education authority.

The visits involve Royal Mail branded workbooks and a video, featuring one of our trucks and drivers. They are undertaken as a recognition exercise by an advanced driver coach and experienced HWDC drivers selected for suitability.

The programme helps us to reach and inform hundreds of children in years five and six who are about to move on to secondary school and begin cycling to school.

‘During the morning I learnt about the mirrors on the truck and how important blind spots really are,’ wrote Amber Jones.

‘My favourite part of the morning was getting in the truck, because you learn about mirrors and the seat is super comfy.’

The programme has been shortlisted for the Road Safety in the Community Award at the 2018 Brake Fleet Safety Awards.

The Brake Fleet Safety Awards dinner takes place at the Hilton Metropole, Birmingham on Thursday 11 October. The awards have become a permanent fixture of the annual road safety calendar and are highly sought after by the nation’s leading fleet managers.
