One year on

It’s just over a year since the completion of the rollout of our new PDAs, and colleagues say they are reaping the benefits of the design changes.
Postmen and women at Exeter say they enjoy the enhanced battery life, ergonomic design and ease of use of the new PDAs when it comes to processing Tracked mail.
‘Now we have the finger scanners we can use both hands, instead of having to hold the old PDA in one and the parcel in the other,’ said postman Reggie Chacko.
Postman Andrew Robertson added: ‘I do overtime and holding the old PDAs and trying to get the button working was hard on the hands. With the new PDAs, you just put a scanner on your hand and away you go – it’s so much better, and the button is easy to use.’
Karen says there is an ‘element of competitiveness’ in how many scans can be done in one evening, which she says can be great for productivity.
She added: ‘Above all, it’s so important that Royal Mail is keeping up with our customers’ demand for more traceability of parcels.’
Adrian Baker, director parcels, products and programmes, says: ‘The new PDAs have made a real difference to our operation. Simple things like the improved battery life have been hugely beneficial, especially over the Christmas peak period. But I suppose it’s the future potential of the devices that is the most exciting thing for the business.’
