A dog’s life

Postman’s passion for greyhound racing

It’s been two years since North East Lincolnshire postman Paul Knox decided to venture into the world of greyhound racing, and he’s never looked back.

After years of being a spectator, a friend suggested he look into greyhound ownership. Paul took the plunge and bought his first greyhound, Swift Hermione, who would go on to win 18 races.

‘Greyhound racing is a very social sport and I’ve made lots of friends through it. I became an owner because I wanted to see a different side of that community,’ said Paul.

‘I always loved the excitement of racing, and as a night out it’s very entertaining. But it’s a different experience being on the track as an owner. When your dog is running you get such a buzz.’

Paul was soon hooked and decided to join a syndicate to buy two more greyhounds, Yahoo Knox and Will She Won’t She. All three dogs live with their trainer near Doncaster, where they have a special gymnasium and a large paddock to run in.

Paul gets regular updates on the dogs’ training, and visits them with his family every Sunday.

He is now hoping to set up a new Royal Mail syndicate with a group of colleagues to jointly own two greyhounds. An initial one-off payment will cover the dogs’ running fees, and any winnings will go towards their training. For details about the syndicate, please contact Paul via janet.knox@ntlworld.com.
