Vote 100

Celebrating our amazing women – Fay Knight

We’ve had an amazing response to our Vote 100 campaign so far so please keep your nominations coming in. Over the next few months we will continue to profile 100 female colleagues who embody our values and demonstrate how Royal Mail Group can be a fantastic place for women to excel.

This week we profile development manager, Fay Knight from HR services in Sheffield.

Head of pensions strategy Douglas Hamilton, said: ‘Fay has been at the heart of delivering a constant stream of large-scale pensions systems projects over the last decade. Her ability to lead change and deal with a heavy workload is exceptional.

‘She is highly respected by her peers and is very supportive of her team. Fay’s ability to simplify complex technical concepts and integrate them into systems and processes is second-to-none. She is a pleasure to work with, and has consistently met challenging project deadlines and milestones. She seems unflappable under pressure.

Recent projects include Pensions Salary Exchange, the 2018 Pensions Review and the re-tendering of the Royal Mail Statutory Pension Scheme contract with Government, all of them significant pieces of work.

‘Fay’s people skills are exemplary. She is able to communicate effectively across multi-disciplinary project teams and she takes great pride in helping her team achieve their objectives. She is well respected across HR Services at all levels.’

RMSPS transition manager Stephen Ede said: ‘From my point of view what makes Fay special is her ability to tailor her communication style across all levels of the business – a friendly encouraging word to one of our administrators who may be struggling with something, providing mentoring for our high potential employees, then five minutes later she’ll be deep in technical pensions conversation with her development team.

‘And then she’s explaining it to people like me in layman’s terms so even non-pension savvy folk can understand the impact of change!’

‘A simple mention of the word “pensions” is often enough to make the listener’s eyes glaze over and to begin with I was no different,’ said Fay. ‘I joined the team because I wanted a real insight into an aspect of HR Services I knew very little about and planned to move on after a couple of years.

‘Here I am over 10 years later working with a fantastic team of people who continue to produce amazing results in challenging circumstances. The pension’s landscape has changed so much over the last few years and being involved at the sharp end has afforded me an opportunity to develop skills and embed knowledge far more than any of my previous roles.

‘I know I’ll not be the first to say that no two days at work are the same but that is very true of my role and variety is one of the things that keeps me interested. I am not a pension’s expert and still have a great deal to learn – maybe the day will come when there’s nothing new on the horizon and I’ll consider a new challenge but I don’t see that happening any time soon…’
