Piece of cake

Jo’s favourite customer made sure she didn’t miss his birthday celebrations

St Albans postwoman Jo England-Vassallo was treated to some surprise cake from one of her happy customers last week.

Jo joined Royal Mail in October last year and has nothing but praise for her new role. Her friend and colleague, Helen Poole, Door to Door media specialist, said: ‘I’ve never met anyone so happy with their job.

‘Jo has been delivering lots of items to the same address over the last few weeks and has become very friendly with the little seven year-old boy who lives there with his mum.

‘Every day the boy came running out to see her to tell her all about his up and coming birthday party.

‘On Monday, when she got to the little boy’s house he wasn’t in but had left her a plastic bag with a birthday cake in it and the message: “To our Royal Mail post lady, from the Smith family X”.

Jo said: ‘I had been delivering lots of parcels to his house and each time I saw him he would tell me: “It’s my birthday soon and I’m going to be having a party.”

‘When I saw the cake, it really made me smile. I was absolutely thrilled; it was such a lovely gesture from the family.

‘I love my job. I really enjoy delivering to people and I just love the daily interaction with customers.’

Helen said: ‘Jo is so enthusiastic about her job and it’s great that she can touch the hearts and minds of our customers.’
