Heart of gold

Postman races to the rescue as pensioner collapses at the wheel

A retired policeman who suffered a heart attack as he attempted to park his car has praised the quick-thinking postman who helped to save his life.

Gary Nisbet was on his delivery round one day in January when he saw a longstanding customer, William Graham, collide with a parked vehicle.

‘I expected to see him pull forward, but he kept reversing, pushing the parked car into another one, so clearly something was seriously wrong,’ said Gary.

‘William was slumped in his seat, so I opened the door, turned the engine off and applied the handbrake. I asked a passer-by to call an ambulance and then, out of nowhere, two women appeared. One happened to be a doctor and she administered CPR.’

Gary, who is based at the G11.12 delivery office in central Glasgow, fetched William’s wife and waited until paramedics had taken him to hospital. He has now made a good recovery.

Gary’s manager, Karen Harrison, said: ‘Gary is very helpful to his customers and every one of them knows who he is.’
