Working to reduce our environmental impact

We published our Corporate Responsibility Report for 2017-18 this week. The report covers how we manage our impact on the environment.

The scale of Royal Mail’s operations means we have a significant environmental impact. Managing this impact is a strategic imperative for our business. By increasing our efficiency and reducing our use of resources, we can help to control our costs and support business performance. At the same time, we are acting to conserve the natural environment in which we operate.

Key achievements 2017-18

  • We reduced our emissions by 4.6% compared to last year. Since 2004-05, our emissions have reduced by 29.1%. As a result of our emissions reduction activity, we received the Energy Managers Association award for most inspiring energy reduction project and the Environmental Data and Information Exchange award for carbon management
  • We diverted 99% of our waste from landfill, 6% more than in 2016-17
  • GLS improved heating controls at the Taastrup depot in Denmark and LED lighting at several Danish sites, saving more than 200,000kWh of energy.

Did you know?

  • Royal Mail operates the largest commercial vehicle fleet in the UK. We have around 48,000 vehicles
  • 42% of our fleet is fitted with telemetry. This lowers maintenance and fuel costs due to improved driving styles. In 2017-18, we saved more than 500,000 litres of diesel by using telemetry systems
  • During 2017-18, we bought 100 fully-electric vehicles for our fleet. We also commissioned nine electric HGVs to trial. These will be used for transporting mail between distribution centres in London and the south east.
