Great ambassador

Fleet vehicle technician Jonathan Poole has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Talent in Logistics Apprentice of the Year Award 2018.
The Talent in Logistics Awards celebrate, recognise and reward excellence in the Transport and Logistics industry. The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at the Telford International Centre on Thursday 21 June.
Royal Mail Fleet is responsible for the design, purchasing, maintaining and disposing of our fleet of 49,000 vehicles; the largest commercial vehicle fleet in Europe. We would not have such a highly efficient and compliant vehicle fleet without our team of 1,000 highly skilled vehicle technicians based in our 110-owned workshops across the UK.
It’s one of our strategic priorities to ensure that we have the most highly skilled and resilient team of vehicle technicians in the industry. That’s why we created our apprentice scheme over 20 years ago and have continued to invest more than £1 million every year in the programme.
We have an intake of approximately 30 apprentices every year who are selected from an intensive screening process. Jonathan joined our scheme in 2013 and immediately impressed with his passion for learning, excellent work ethic and approach to problem-solving. Throughout his four-year apprenticeship, Jonathan has consistently demonstrated a desire to go the extra mile and unselfishly support his colleagues. He is a great ambassador for our company and our apprentice scheme.
The following testimonials have been provided by Jonathan’s learning assessor and line manager and demonstrate how lucky we are to have someone of Jonathan’s calibre on the team:
Phil Hockey, vocational learning assessor, from Babcock Technical Training Academy, said: ‘Jonathan was one of the most committed learners I’ve had the pleasure to work with. He would always ensure there was work ready for his visits where possible and if it wasn’t, he was prepared to go to another depot to do the work.
‘His skills and knowledge in the automotive sector and ability is outstanding. Jonathan’s work ethic and attitude to work was fantastic. I’ve always found Jonathan to be mature beyond his years. One example of this was when his light vehicle evidence portfolio containing over a years’ worth of workshop evidence went missing from Coventry workshop. He calmly just got on with collecting more job card evidence and still completed his qualification on time.’
Fleet supervisor Ian Fox, from our Rugby workshop, said: ‘Jonathon is a well-mannered and polite man and great to have in the workshop. He is genuinely interested in vehicles of all types. He has a great understanding around many types of vehicles and he is always keen to learn more.
‘He is great at helping people out if needed and would make a very good mentor and supervisor in the future. I never have any issues with the quality of his work and all of his jobs are at top standards.’
Fleet Apprentice Awards
Jonathan was recently awarded ‘Apprentice of the Year – 4th Year’ and ‘Apprentice of the Scheme’ at our recent graduation and recognition event. This was a high profile endorsement of his achievements and well deserved recognition from his peers.
