Kay’s an England star

Dream for Towcester postwoman as she’s selected for the England walking football squad

‘I’m going to be playing for my country, I can’t believe it,’ exclaims Kay Miller as she reacts to being selected for the England Women’s over-40s squad just a few months after taking up the sport.

The postwoman, from Towcester SPDO, is a passionate football fan who responded to an urge to return to playing the sport she loves by following up on an advert for new players from Northampton Town Ladies Walking Football Club.

‘After working all the way through the pandemic I wanted to do something for my own sanity and mental health,’ says Kay. ‘I kept putting it off and wondered whether I really wanted to start up again at my age.

‘I played 11-a-side football in boys’ teams when I was younger and in a girls’ team when I was 15 but, other than the odd charity game, I haven’t really played football since then. And I’d never played walking football.

‘I turned up for my first training session with Northampton like a shy schoolgirl but everyone was so welcoming. As soon as I started touching the ball it took me back and I have loved every second.’

So impressed with Kay were the Northampton coaches, that she was put forward for a trial with England.

‘I was taken aback,’ says the Manchester United fan. ‘I had to give it a go. I had two trials and got through after the second one. The standard is really good. It’s nice to know I must still have a bit of something to be picked for England.

‘Walking football is still an up-and-coming sport and there is a fight for it become recognised officially by the Football Association. There are new teams popping up all over the country on a weekly basis but at the moment it’s all self-funded.’

Kay will join up for her first official England training session next month, with a debut appearance for a country possible in October. She believes her job at Royal Mail has prepared her perfectly for success on the national stage.

She said: ‘There’s obviously a connection with the walking thing – I do it for a job!’
