First past the post
As soon as the poll on Workplace opened last week to decide the winner of this year’s Special Recognition Award, both Barnsley and Balham Delivery Offices made it clear that they were in it to win it.
It was a close-run race to the finish line, in which the two teams moved very quickly off the starting blocks.
The two competitors – one from the north, and one from the south - remained on an even footing until the very end – when Barnsley strode into the lead to take first place.
After receiving 702 votes from colleagues on Workplace, Barnsley has walked off with £10,000 in prize money to spend on their unit.
Balham came a close second with 649 votes. Carlisle Mail Centre took third place with 152 votes.
CEO Simon Thompson, who is co-sponsor of the Special Recognition Award with our COO Achim Dünnwald, announced the winner on Workplace moments after the vote closed.
He said: ‘Nearly 2,000 people voted, which is beyond incredible. I watched on Workplace all of the videos and lobbying and it has been tremendous.
‘I’d like to acknowledge all of the nominees. The videos have been hugely impressive and highlight the enormous efforts of all of our teams and everything you’ve done.’

Barnsley’s story of battling through the coronavirus pandemic and high absence levels to maintain a quality service, alongside poor weather and a broken lift, won the hearts of colleagues voting on Workplace.
Mark Wilkinson, Service Delivery Leader for South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire said: ‘Barnsley has had a tremendous year given all of the circumstances and they are worthy winners.’
And you can watch the winner’s story here. It seems a new lift is in order!
Lindsay Rodger, a deployment manager based at Glasgow Mail Centre added: ‘I've worked with Barnsley to deploy test kit collections and deliveries over the last hectic year and they are a superb team, who have overcome many challenges.’
