Our Sports Foundation provides grants for our people to provide equipment, trophies and training to local clubs.
Charlie Flynn

Royal Mail’s Sports Foundation supports local sports clubs through grants for our people to provide equipment, trophies and training. The Foundation also enables us to provide support for colleagues to pursue their own sporting ambitions. Charlie Flynn, who worked at our Scottish distribution centre in Wishaw, provides a good example of what such support can help our people achieve. Charlie won gold in the lightweight boxing division at the Commonwealth Games in August 2014 and was quick to acknowledge the importance of Royal Mail’s support.

“Royal Mail have been there helping all the way, giving me time off and paid leave, helping me buy my kit,” he told The Daily Express. “They’ve done everything.” Charlie has since left Royal Mail to take up boxing professionally.

During 2017-18, we supported 50 sports clubs and individual sport events by providing a total of almost £30,000 in grant funding.

What does the Sports Foundation expect in return?

The Sports Foundation will expect certain standards from a team or individual applying which include:

  • Sports Foundation branding of kit or equipment
  • Proactive use of PR where appropriate (elite athletes) e.g. promotion of products and services (such as Stamp launches)

  • Clear aim/objective of funding or other support and evidence of spend
  • A maximum of one application per financial year
  • All successful grant applications will be subject to a maximum award of £500.

Please visit the Sports Foundation webpage for more information regarding the criteria that need to be satisfied in order to qualify for a grant and note that the annual application window will re-open in the New Year.
