Julie Fitchett, a postwoman from west Swindon, was bitten by a dog in January this year.
Julie says: ‘I approached the house and as I put one foot on the open driveway, I saw a husky dog outside the front door.
Trousers covered in blood
‘I stopped immediately and the dog ran towards me barking. I was very frightened so I stood still, the dog ran past me but then turned and bit me on my right thigh.’
Amazingly, Julie finished her round, but on returning to the office she noticed that her trousers were covered in blood.
Julie’s injuries caused her to need three weeks off work with tissue damage and she is scarred for life. Julie says: ‘I’m now terrified of dogs!’
National dog awareness campaign
We know that between 3,000 and 4,000 postmen and women are attacked by dogs every year. Our national dog awareness campaign appeals to pet owners to keep animals under control when our people call to deliver the mail.
