The highlights of our 2011-12 results

  • Group external revenue is up after two years of successive decline
  • Overall operating profit[1] up from £39 million to £211 million
  • More cash came into the business than went out for first time in four years
  • Core UK business is out of the red but makes just a third of penny in every pound
  • UK parcel numbers up 6% and represent great growth opportunity

We have today announced improved results for 2011-12. We are making good progress on restoring our financial health. While our strategy is delivering results and our profitability is improving, we need to do more to put Royal Mail Group on a sustainable footing.

Chief executive Moya Greene says: ‘I am pleased to say we have made good progress in the last 12 months. ‘Thanks to your efforts we have started to turn around the business. But, there is much more to do.‘We need to execute all the main elements of our strategy. That means successfully delivering our modernisation programme, focusing  on our customers and grasping the growth opportunity in the parcels and marketing mail businesses.’

Growing story

Years of successive losses in our core UK business have been tackled. However, it made a profit[2] of only £23 million on revenue of £7.2 billion. That is a third of a penny in every pound.Parcels are a growth story. They now account for almost half our overall revenue. The number of UK parcels we handle grew a further 6%. Letter numbers fell by the same amount. While the figures look relatively healthy, GLS - our European logistics business - and our sister company Post Office Limited remain the biggest contributors to our profits[3]. These account for almost £9 out of every £10 of profit.

Over the next few days we will run a series of stories on myroyalmail focusing on the different elements that contributed to these results. There will also be a dedicated programme on RMTV in the next week.
